Description
A comforting and flavorful beef gyros recipe perfect for easy weeknight dinners, inspired by summer nights at Greek festivals.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp cumin
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 pita bread, warmed
- 1 cup cucumber, diced
- 1 cup tomatoes, diced
- 1 cup lettuce, shredded
- ½ red onion, thinly sliced
- ½ cup tzatziki sauce
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks, for approximately 5-7 minutes.
- Once the beef is cooked through, toss in the minced garlic, dried oregano, smoked paprika, cumin, ground cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- While the beef is melding with the spices, warm the pita bread slightly in the oven or on a skillet until soft and pliable.
- To assemble your gyros, place a generous scoop of the spiced beef mixture in the center of the warmed pita.
- Layer on your desired toppings: cucumber, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and sliced onion.
- Drizzle with tzatziki sauce, and wrap the pita around the filling, securing it tightly.
- Serve immediately, or make a batch to share!
Notes
Feel free to substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option. Leftovers can be used in salads or stuffed peppers.
