- 1 lb ground beef (lean, 85/15)
- 4 medium potatoes (russet or Yukon gold, peeled and sliced thin)
- 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
- 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
- ½ cup milk
- 2 tbsp butter (melted)
- Salt (to taste)
- Pepper (to taste)
- Garlic powder (to taste)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190 °C).
- Place the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, cooking for 7 to 10 minutes until browned and draining excess fat.
- Return the skillet to medium heat and add the chopped onion, sautéing for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent.
- Sprinkle salt, pepper, and garlic powder over the beef-onion mix, stirring for another minute.
- Slice the potatoes as thinly as possible.
- In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, layer half of the potato slices, seasoning lightly with salt and pepper.
- Spread the beef-onion mix evenly over the potatoes.
- Top with the remaining potato slices.
- Whisk together milk and melted butter in a small bowl, then pour over the casserole.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and continue baking for another 15 to 20 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
- Check doneness with a fork; potatoes should be tender.
- Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
