Description
A heartwarming apple pie filled with tender apples and warm spices, perfect for cozy autumn evenings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 Perfect Pie Crust Recipe
- ¼ cup butter
- 8 cups thinly sliced apples (peeled and cored)
- 2/3 cup lightly packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon water
- Coarse sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and set aside a 9-inch pie plate for later.
- Melt the butter in a large pot over medium-low heat. Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt. Stir everything together and cook for about 8 to 10 minutes until the apples soften. Let the mixture cool.
- Roll out one disc of pie dough to fit the pie plate and gently press it in.
- Whisk together the egg and water in a bowl for an egg wash, then set aside.
- Transfer the cooled apple filling into the crust, topping it with either a full top crust or braiding strips over the filling.
- Seal the pie by trimming any excess dough and crimping the edges. Brush the top with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
- Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F, then reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 40 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling. If the top browns too quickly, cover with aluminum foil.
- Let the pie cool before serving, as this will help the filling set perfectly.
Notes
Make-Ahead: Prep your pie a day in advance, storing in the fridge before baking. Slicing apples with a mandoline ensures even cooking.
